Phaedon Georgitsis, a popular Greek actor from the Golden Age of Greek Cinema, died in Athens on March 1, aged 80.

The famous actor had been suffering from brain cancer for several years.

His appearance in iconic films in the Sixties and Seventies has ensured that he’ll always be remember. He performed in dozens of films, 13 of which were produced by Finos Films.

Iconic films included The Red Lanterns, Mermaids and Lads (Gorgones ke Manges), Blood on the Land and Marijuana Stop!

Born on January 26, 1939, Georgitsis was drawn to the cinema from a young age and pursued a career in acting despite opposition from his father, a naval officer, who wanted his son to pursue a military career. He managed to get into the prestigious Karolos Koun Drama School and the rest – for most Greeks – is history.

After a bright career, he created a theatre in Koropi upon his retirement.
