Manolis Bouhlis, Greek paratrooper with the Hellenic Army General Staff (GES), is under investigation after he videoed himself singing a patriotic song during jump exercises.

The video featured Bouhlis singing “Famous Macedonia”, regarded as the official anthem of Macedonia used by the Hellenic Army since the Balkan Wars. The video went viral, however the GES has started an investigation as the video is considered to be in breach of safety procedures.

The investigation angered many social media users as they believe that the real reason for the investigation was not the video but the choice of song. There is speculation that the Greek Army is worried that the patriotic chant would offend North Macedonia.

Mr Bouhlis said that he created the video as an act of “pride, devotion and courage.”

Defence Minister Evangelos Apostolakis, former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, had also filmed himself during an exercise jump in December 2018.
