Konstantinos Chatziemmanouil, aged 91, from the Aegean island of Kos, won a 60-metre race at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Poland on Wednesday.

The veteran athlete competed in the 90+ category with other octogenarians and finished in just 13.06 seconds. What makes the win even more impressive is that Mr Chatziemmanouil, a retired farmer, vinier and hotelier, began running at the age of eighty.

The octogenarian said that he was inspired to take up the sport after he watched older athletes competing on his island.

“It’s never too late to start athletics, as long as you fight and try hard,” he said.
