A decades-long fight for the construction of a mosque in Athens will come to an end over the coming months.
The construction of the mosque by the country’s minority Muslim population will finally be completed in September. The place of worship is designed to accommodate 350 people and will be located on the outskirts of the city.
Education and Religion Minister Kostas Gavroglou toured the nearly completed site on Friday.

“Athens finally has a house of prayer for Muslims,” Mr Gavroglou said.
The mosque plans were approved by Parliament in 2016, and its creation will put an end to the illegal sites of worship around Athens.
Until now, Athens has been the only European capital without an official mosque.
