Last Saturday’s match-up between the Hawthorn Spartans and Old Geelong that was held at South Yarra’s Como Park will definitely be one to remember.
The home side was able to walk away with a narrow win by a seven-point margin, despite starting the game on the back foot.
The visitors were ailing from a number of injuries and absences, yet they still put up a good fight that made Old Geelong really work for the win, providing the spectators with a great show.
The Spartans came out of the locker rooms with their foot on the gas in their usual fashion, as they created a difference of 17 points in the first quarter.
Yet the lack of options from the bench, which has been the main force behind their great season, began to slow their movements and give the home team the opening they were looking for to claw back into the game.
By the time the third quarter came around, they had managed to turn the game on its head. After that, the Spartans just couldn’t find the energy necessary to make another comeback and succumbed to the superiority of their opponents.

They will need to pick themselves up quickly though as they have yet another difficult game ahead, this time at the Rathmine Reserve against second-placed PEGS Essendon Grammar.
Should they suffer a second consecutive defeat, it could well mean their fall from the top position of the ladder. They currently remain there having 10 wins and now two losses.
