The German Foreign Ministry responded to Greece’s demand for war reparations in June this year.

Greece had asked Germany to return billions of euros for funds that were snatched from Greece’s coffers between 1941 and 1944 during the Nazi Occupation of the country.

A one-page response was sent to the Greek Embassy in Berlin stating that the matter of German WWII reparations was a non-issue.

Deutsche Welle reported that the German side had also rejected a verbal remonstration from Greece, stating that the issue of reparations had been legally settled.

Germany’s position has always been firm regarding the matter and though it recognises its political and moral responsibility for crimes committed in Greece, it refuses to accept the claims for reparations.

In Greece, all political parties have converged on the matter of reparations with studies supporting Greece’s claims.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias emphasised Greece’s reparations claims during their recent visit to Germany.
