Over 130 educators, school representatives and members of the Melbourne Greek community attended the launch of Anna Stories an educational book series, which was written and illustrated by Niki Farfara-Pashos and Ourania Papageorgiou, as well as accompanying educational resources to the series.
The collection of 24 short stories which recounts the adventures of an inquisitive little girl, the Anna of the title, and is aimed at primary school students. The launch took place at Alphington Grammar School on Sunday, 24 November.
Anna Stories also includes cards, games, dolls and online stories with activities brought to life by Perry Papageorgiou of Continuous Learning who designed and developed the resources that accompany the series. Also included is a complete learning package for educators and schools.
“Storytelling is a powerful way to share cultural, moral and social entertainment and education,” said Ms Farafa-Pashos. “We are using storytelling to enable children to listen to the Greek language and develop their oral and listening skills while, at the same time, enhancing their imagination.”

The event was officially opened by Manos Tzimpragos the Principal Education Officer, Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria and is also the Principal of the Language and Culture Schools.
The keynote address was given by Dr Stephie Nikoloudis, lecturer and coordinator of Greek Studies at the Department of Languages and Linguistics at La Trobe University.
Educators Vicky Petalas and Katerina Poutachidou demonstrated a number of ways in which fellow educators could use the Anna Stories series to inspire their students.
The stories will be translated into a number of other languages.
