Melburnians’ movement is restricted to a 10km radius from their home.
But a peculiar visitor spotted in inner-city Melbourne was quite clearly flouting the rules.
Fitzroy locals were stunned to see a deer running through the streets on Saturday morning.
Video and photos shared on social media showed the animal running through the suburb’s streets, including the intersection of Johnson and Smith streets, where spotted and captured by a local’s lens.
“I was like ‘oh my God, there’s a bloody deer running across the road looking pretty distressed’,” a Collingwood local who was out at the time for a coffee, told the ABC.
“It was a bit of excitement for my lockdown day.”

According to Australian Deer Association’s Barry Howlett, the animal had most likely travelled from outer suburbs in search of a partner.
“It would’ve been a very young and confused animal,” Mr Howlett told the ABC and stated that euthanising the animal was “the most humane course of action”, under the circumstances.
“It’d be very difficult to effectively sedate it and then you’d have the problem that it’s actually illegal to release these animals in the wild anyway.”
Calls to police about the deer being out and about were referred to Wildlife Victoria, with another agency, Vets for Compassion, having reportedly assessed the deer before the animal was euthanised.
