Christos Tzanoudakis, 86, died from coronavirus becoming the fourth victim of Covid-19 in New Zealand.
Born in Topolia, Chania, Crete, on 8 October, 1933, there were plans for him to return to Crete with his daughter however these were destroyed when the coronavirus pandemic stopped international travel.
Mr Tzanoudakis immigrated from Greece to New Zealand in the 1960s, and was the former president and founding member of the Cretan Association of New Zealand. He worked in families, as a dock worker, and opened a fish and chip shop where he worked until he retired.
He is survived by two children, Emmanuel and Vasiliki, and two grandchildren.
Christos Anastasiadis, a close friend of Mr Tzanoudakis and former president of the New Zealand Cretan association said that Mr Tzanoudakis was a special man who was always there for those who needed him. Speaking to SBS, Mr Anastasiadis said that he plans to organise an event in memory of the late victim of coronavirus when the pandemic is over.
