Kleio Nikakis, a well-known figure of the Greek community of Melbourne, passed away on 22 April 2020, aged 90.
Kleio and her husband, Michael, were known for their strong presence in the Greek Australian hospitality industry with the ownership of restaurants such as Xenia, Panorama Reception and Hellas Reception among others.
The coupe were well-known figures on Lonsdale Street at a time when it was the centre of the Greek community.
Born in Chania, Crete, in 1930, Kleio came to Australia in 1947 when she was just aged 17 years. Her husband was also of Cretan origin who came to Australia in 1933, aged 21. He passed away in 1977, leaving behind the end of an era for the Greek Australian community.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, 28 April, at 10.30am at St Anargiros Church, Oakleigh, in a closed circle due to coronavirus restrictions, however a memorial service to celebrate and honour her life will take place at a future date. Her burial will take place at Springvale crematorium.
Kleio Nikakis leaves behind her children George and Anastasia, Kosta and Yayoi, and Theano and Peter. She is also the loving grandmother of Claire, Sarah, Julia, Michaela and Liam, Miro, Michael, Kosta and Aspasia, and the loving great grandmother of Milla, Max, Peter, Kleos, Olympia and Lilla.
