Thanks to… technology and the organisers’ determination at Brisbane’s Paniyiri Greek Festival, the solution was found for the much awaited event to continue uninterrupted in its 41st year, despite COVID-19.
Regular festival-goers have rejoiced to the news that the Festival goes online this Sunday, 24 May, with a two-hour Facebook livestream jam-packed with its most popular offerings.
Crowds were treated to a teaser ‘welcome’ act on Saturday night, with DJ Jordy Gee and guest apprentice KASBOI on the decks proving that younger generations keep the Greek music going.
And the countdown is on, at the time of writing, with just a few hours left for the main event kickstarting at 2 p.m.
Get ready to celebrate all things Greek from the comfort of your home: cooking demonstrations, live bouzouki, a session dedicated to the Greek costumes’ tradition and a dance till you drop Zorba class! The lineup also includes a virtual tour of the Greek Orthodox Church of St George.

Meanwhile, Brisbane-based foodies don’t even have to miss out on the delicacies found every year at the festival, at Musgrave Park, as the Greek club’s Nostimo Restaurant made sure to prepare a special takeaway menu just for this weekend dedicated to the Paniyiri lovers.
