Greece’s opposition party, SYRIZA, sent a letter expressing their content with the decision for La Trobe’s Greek program future, giving credit to the GOCMV and other diaspora organisations for the positive outcome.
The letter, signed by SYRIZA MP Rallia Christidou and addressed to Greek Community of Melbourne’s Education Officer, Theo Markou, reads as follows:
We are happy to inform you
That we have received a reply by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the parliamentary scrutiny question I had submitted, along with 27 more MPs from SYRIZA, regarding the subsequent abolition of the Greek Studies Program of the La Trobe University (there is still a reply pending from the Greek Ministry of Education, though).
In its reply, that I also forward, the MFA informs us officially about the good news. As I am sure you are already aware of, there was a teleconference on December 8th, between the EOKMB, the Deputy Coordinator of Education and the LaTrobe Rectorate, where an agreement was obtained for the maintenance of the program. These are certainly very positive news, and I think it is safe to say that this change is largely owed to the timely efforts of the EOKMB and the other Diaspora organizations that got active on the matter.
As far as we are concerned, I need to reassure you that, as in the case of the Greek Studies Program of the La Trobe, we are at your disposal for any other issue you may need to alert us about in the future. We consider issues that have to do with Greeks abroad and Greek Diaspora of the greatest importance and we are always happy to communicate and to help in any way possible.
Sincerely yours,
Rallia Christidou
