Greece holds the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance this year, and a 10-day virtual event is being held in honour of the Greek-Jewish Community.
There will be 12 films and four lectures presented from 27 January to 6 February as part of the programme of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, in collaboration with the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and the UCLA Alan D Leve Center for Jewish Studies.
The films have been selected for their artistic focus, and include: “The Queen Of Rebetiko: My Sweet Canary”, “Cloudy Sunday”, “Magic Men”, “Trezoros: The Lost Jews Of Kastoria”, “Romaniotes: The Greek Jews Of Ioannina”, “Life Will Smile”, “Eleftheromania”, “The Great Fire Of Salonica: Birth of a City”, “Heroes Of Salonica”, “Island Of Roses: The Jews Of Rhodes In Los Angeles”, “Kisses To The Children” and “My People: The Jews Of Greece” in an extended special preview. Lectures kick off with a conversation with Ioannina’s Mayor Moses Elisaf (27 January, 10am PT) and continue with a talk by the Kehila Kedosha Janina Museum Director Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos (29 January, 10am PT). University of Macedonia Professor Leon Saltiel will talk about the destruction of Thessaloniki’s Jewish Cemetery during WWII (1 February, 10am PT) and historian/author Rena Molcho will talk about the problems of incorporating the Holocaust into the Greek collective memory (3 February, 10am PT).
