The Mavraganis School of Greek language and culture has been offering Greek studies for 45 years.

In 1978, it was difficult to find a space to run a Greek school and George Fountas offered his house to get the school up and running. For 28 years the school operated in the Richmond area, before moving on to Box Hill and for the last 30 years at Mount Waverley.

The school is distinguished for its strong presence in the parish with participation in major events, such as the Antipodes Festival, with performances in senior clubs and organising an excursion to Morwell. A highlight was the trip to Greece where the school participated in the Pan-Hellenic theatrical competition for secondary school students organised by the Ministry of Education of Greece. It was the first Greek school to make this trip and Neos Kosmos had described it as “a historic trip” at the time.

The school is recognised by the Victorian Department of Education and has receives textbooks from the Ministry of Education of Greece, is a member of the Community Language Victoria Organisation and the Association of Greek Language and Culture Schools.

Mavraganis Greek School follows the Victorian school curriculum and covers all levels, from prep to VCE. Tuition is reasonable and there are no extra charges. All school events and annual dancing events are free.
