The prince of Wales and the duchess of Cornwall will pay an official visit to Athens on 24 and 25 March to attend national anniversary events and meet with state officials.

The military parade on 25 March is marking 200-years since the war that resulted in Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire and rebirth as a nation, will be held without spectators due to the coronavirus, and only Greek and foreign political officials will attend it.

The visit follows an invitation by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to an announcement from the premier’s office.

At the same time, Greece has confirmed 2,535 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours alone, ANA-MPA SA reports.

Eleven of those case have been identified at entry points to the country as per the National Public Health Organization’s (EODY) directive published on Saturday.

Currently, a total of 672 patients are on ventilators in hospitals with 1,572 people having been discharged from Intensive Care Units (ICUs) since the start of the pandemic.

In the last 24 hours 513 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital while the average admission of coronavirus cases to hospitals over the last 7 days was 469.

The median age of intubated patients according to EODY is 68 years with 82 per cent of said cases suffering from an underlying condition.

To this date, Greece has confirmed 235,611 infections from the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, during the past week 67 infections have been linked to international travel while 2,362 new infections have been attributed to other confirmed cases within the community.

In the last 24 hours, Greece’s death toll jumped to 60, bringing the pandemic victims to 7,421 in total out of which 95.8 per cent had an underlying condition and/or were 70 years old.

Finally, the median age of new infections is 44 years, while the median age of the deceased is 79.
