Residents of Katerini, the capital city of the Pieria regional unit in Central Macedonia, are in shock following the murder of a man, whose charred remains were found by a passer-by near the walls of the cemetery of Kallithea on Tuesday afternoon.

The man’s hands had been tied behind his back and a sack had been placed over his head, and it is believed upon first observation that he had been burnt alive.

Greek TV channel MEGA reported that the victim, aged 45, had gone missing on Monday. First accounts state that the man had recently returned to Greece from Australia and it is reported that he was dependent on drugs.

Katerini’s Police are carrying out investigations to determine details surrounding the death.

Residents of Katerini have been shocked by the nature of the crime and the condition in which the body had been found.

A coroner’s investigation showed that the man had been shot in the head which was covered by a sack when a lodged itself in his eye, his body was then burnt, possibly in the hopes that it would not be identified.
