A story spanning 100 years since the Panathinaikos’ basketball team establishment has been turned into a movie.
Titled “Journey to the Stars”, the film captures the team’s six European championships, big and small stories of the highly celebrated, but also the “invisible” protagonists to the wider public.
Fans are promised a glimpse into the backstage work that brought the Greens to one of the top European basketball teams.
The role of the Giannakopoulos’ is presented as defining in leading the club’s men’s basketball team “on a trip to the Stars since 1987 when they took over the reins.
The family of business tycoons is said to have “adored Panathinaikos deeply.”
Beyond the turning point in the team’s ownership and administration, the film follows the men’s basketball team’s history since its founding in 1919 with highlights including: the first presentation of the women’s team in 1937, the stance of its athletes during the years of Occupation and in the most recent past the qualification into the top “4” of UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup
“Journey to the Stars” is expected to hit the big screen in Greece in September, but the movie will be available for online streaming on 27 June in three different time zones to cater for fans living in Europe, Australia and the United States.
The cast includes Greek Australian actor Vaggelis Mourikis, Anna Maria Papacharalampous and a guest appearance by Zeta Makripoulia.
