The Bondi COVID-19 cluster has grown to 21 after NSW Health authorities announced 10 new infections since Monday – six were locally and acquired, and four in hotel quarantine.

Three of the new cases were recorded before 8pm whereas three cases were also confirmed today, including a woman in her 60s from Illawarra and a woman in her 40s from Sydney’s northern suburbs.

There was an unlinked case of a primary school student from a St Charles in Waverly in Sydney’s east ,which is in the same geographical location as Bondi Junction though there is not a link yet.

NSW Health officials said there were five new cases recorded in the 24 hours until 8pm and two which had already been reported on Monday. Another seven cases were recorded after deadline which will be included in Wednesday’s tally.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the case number will continue to grow as more household contacts of cases test positive in coming days.

“Unfortunately, a number of people who contracted the virus have done so in a very fleeting way, literally being within less than a metre of somebody but sharing the same airspace without any physical contact has still meant the virus has transferred,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“A very fleeting exchange or a very fleeting coexistence has actually allowed the virus to transfer and highlights how contagious it is.”

The premier announced extended mandatory face mask restrictions on Tuesday for another seven days in Greater Sydney, Wollongong and Shellharbour. In these areas  there is a mandatory face mask restriction for people indoors.

A total of 28,645 tests were confirmed in the 24 hours to 8pm on Monday.
