Greece has been fighting wildfires all over the country for days with last night being a particularly difficult operation for 679 firefighters across 21 groups, 335 vehicles, 13 helicopters and 9 aircraft.

Military forces were also called to assist the fire brigade with both on land manpower and via air.

Over 57 bushfires burning through currently started in the past 24 hours. There are fires on the island of Evoia, Varnavas near Attiki, Volos, the Evros region, on Crete and Chios islands, in Chalkidiki near Thessaloniki, as well as Elefsina and Aspropyrgos in Attiki.

Evros’ Deputy Regional Governor Dimitris Petrovits, said the fire is “out of control” in the northern side of the settlement.

Several villages in those areas have been evacuated. Hundreds of holidaymakers had to pack up and leave nearby forested areas.

Authorities have warned people for increased danger of more fires breaking out due to high temperatures and strong winds, offering advice on how to prevent a fire from starting or reaching residential areas.
