With the Australian borders now shut for more than 18 months, and no end in sight about when the permanent residents and citizens of the vast migrant population will have the opportunity to reunite with their parents, the group “Parents Are Immediate Family” is organising peaceful assemblies on Saturday 7 August, across all the major cities in the country.
The goal of the advocacy organisation PAIF, with more than 20,000 members and counting, is to persuade the government to recognise parents as immediate family, for the purposes of visa exemptions, which would give them a chance to reunite with their immediate family in a safe and considered way.
The peaceful assemblies will be held physically at 11am in Canberra (Federation Mall, Capital Hill), Adelaide (Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, Grote St), and Perth (Forrest Place) and virtually in all the other major cities where restrictions are imposed.

“For those unable to attend an assembly due to lockdowns, restrictions or distance, please join our virtual campaign by making our cause known online!” is the group’s message, calling for people to make your voice heard wherever they may be in Australia, or around the world, by posting this cause on all social channels.
