Τhe ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio in Attica saw high numbers of passengers on Friday and Saturday as city residents made their last big exodus during Greek summer, heading to the islands en masse for Dekapentavgoustos.

Travellers were required to fill an online statement of health on the Shipping Ministry’s webpage, as well as present either a certificate of completed vaccination or proof of a negative coronavirus test before boarding.

Greece confirmed 3,270 new coronavirus infections in the 24 hours to Saturday and 24 deaths.

Another 285 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital, with those on ventilators amounting to 236 as per latest data.

In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 124 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,336 to other confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, traffic patrols by police were expected to increase over the weekend with officials inspecting key gathering points for passengers, including airports, ports, train stations and coach terminals, as well as within city boundaries.

Just on Friday, sailings with destinations in the Aegean sea reached 28 (24,556 passengers). There were also 39 for the Argosaronic Gulf (6,776 passengers), 16 from Rafina (6,924) and 11 from Lavrio (2,964).

According to a statement by Hellenic Police, trucks with a weight of more than 1.5 tons were also banned from national highways for several hours per day during the big exodus from the capital on August 13-15.
