Victoria has recorded 55 new local cases of COVID-19, which dropped slightly from yesterday’s spike.

There were 49 linked to known outbreaks and 25 have been in isolation for their infectious period.

The new cases follow the 57 new local infections noted in Victoria on Thursday and 24 the day before.

There are more than 530 exposure sites in Victoria, including a Reject Shop at Moonee Ponds and Coles Broadmeadows added to the list last night.

Yesterday, Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews said the “system is working” despite the spike. He had said that the cases seemed like “a very big number” but the majority of those cases had been isolating from their infectious period.

A great deal of focus over the weekend was on illegal gatherings, and in particular, the video footage of a prominent family which held an engagement party during Melbourne’s lockdown where coronavirus spread. There have been almost $22,000 worth of fines issued for that event.

Chief Police Commissioner Shane Patton said four fines had been issued, including two to each of the parents of the bride-to-be and two to the engaged couple at $5,452 each, totalling $21,808 between the family to be.

Melbourne is just over two weeks into its sixth lockdown, which has been extended until at least 2 September.
