In the aftermath of the resignation of President Bill Papas, there seems to be an exodus of players from Sydney Olympic, some of whom have been stars of the team for many years.
The latest of them are the veteran of 13 years, Jason Madonis, and regular midfielder, Nikola Kuleski, who had been with the club since 2017.
Their departure follows the transfers of Mohamed Adam and Fabian Monge to the 2nd Division Greek side, Xanthi FC, which is owned by Mr Papas.
Madonis had been with the club since the age of 12 and was disheartened to be leaving his childhood club.
“After being at a club for 13 years they become like your family, so when you leave it’s only natural to feel sadness. However, with the sadness also comes plenty of optimism and excitement for what the future has in store for me,” Madonis told Neos Kosmos.
“I take great pride in knowing that I gave absolutely everything during my time at Sydney Olympic FC and dedicated a large part of my life to the club. After 2 titles and around 150 appearances I felt that I needed a new challenge and a new environment to refresh my football,” Madonis said.
The Olympic legend was also quick to give his thanks to the club and its supporters.
“I would like to thank all Sydney Olympic FC fans out there for supporting me from such a young age and I wish them and the club the very best for the future.”
Madonis has signed a contract for fellow NPL club Sutherland Sharks from next season onwards, and he hopes his career will produce more titles.
“I was seeking a new challenge and I still have big ambitions…I want to win another championship with two different clubs before it’s all said and done,” Madonis said.
Sydney Olympic, in its social media platform announced that they “would like to thank them (Madonis and Kuleski) for the contribution they have made to Olympic over many years and we wish them the best for the future.”
