With 92 new coronavirus cases reported on Sunday, Victoria has officially reached its highest daily tally for the year.

It is also the largest number of infections recorded within 24 hours since 110 on September 2, 2020.

The grim milestone comes as a new cluster has emerged in Port Melbourne and the virus continues to spread in Shepparton.

Authorities however said yesterday that they are starting to bring the regional town outbreak under control.

Of the 92 new infections, 31 are yet to be linked to a known source of transmission.

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed on Sunday that the state’s sixth lockdown will be extended past Thursday 2 September.

“Obviously with almost 100 cases today, where many of them remain mysteries, many of them were out in the community during their infectious period, it is not going to be possible for us to open up our Victorian community in just a couple of days’ time,” Mr Andrews said.

As it stands, Victoria has a total of more than 700 cases.

Over 51,000 test results were processed in the state in the past 24 hours and over 31,000 vaccine doses were administered.
