A 27-year-old Portuguese defender playing for a top-ranking Greek football team in the Super League was brought before a public prosecutor following his indictment for the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl.
The well-known player was arrested on Sunday by law enforcement officers from the Department of the Attica Security Protection of Minors. The girl alleges that he had lured her to his house after meeting her at a club and raped her, along with another man in the earlier hours of 28 August.
The footballer’s lawyer said the player denies all charges, adding also that he was unaware of the girl’s age when the incident took place. He will appear before an examining magistrate on Tuesday to plea his case.
Later on Monday, following the player’s appearance before the prosecutor, Greek authorities also arrested a Nigerian man, aged 40, accused of the same offence. He was sought on a warrant and will appear before a prosecutor on Tuesday (Greek time).
