Maria Sakkari continued her giant killing act and made history in the process when she became the first Greek woman to advance to the semi finals of the US Open after overcoming the former world number one Karolina Pliskova.

The Greek star, who until this year had not gone past the fourth round of a major tournament, beat the Czech player 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter final match on Wednesday evening (US time). Her victory matched her success in reaching the French Open semi finals in June.

On Tuesday, Sakkari, aged 26, beat Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open Champion, in a gruelling three-and-a-a-half hour match to take on Pliskova.

The match finished at 2.15am – the latest for any game played in the US Open history.

In her game against Pliskova, Sakkari played 23 winners and committed just 12 unforced errors. She did not face a single break point in the entire match.

She will face 18-year-old Briton Emma Raducanu on Thursday (New York time). Raducanu beat Switzerland’s Belinda Besic, also in a straight-sets win, to set up the meeting with Sakkari for a place in the final on Saturday, 11 September.
