The 2021 Ostrava Open is Maria Sakkari’s first final in two years, but the dream of taking home the top title was over in an hour and a half.
The 26-year-old lost to unseeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit in straight sets, 6-2 7-5, on Sunday.
Kontaveit blitzed past Sakkari in the opening set, jumping to a 4-1 lead and gained another break in the eighth game to take it 6-2.

The young Greek tennis star fought somewhat harder in the second set and both players held their serve. Unfortunately Sakkari’s opponent built a 40-0 lead in the 12th game before converting her first match point into a winning point. Her 20 winners were overshadowed by 23 unforced errors.
It was a shocking loss for Sakkari, who up until this point, had won all of her games in straight sets. Despite this loss, she is still likely to move into the top 10.
