New South Wales Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is set to become the state premier following negotiations held in the wake former premier’s Gladys Berejiklian’s shock resignation of last Friday.

The ABC reported that under a negotiated agreement that will see Mr Perrottet become the new premier, Minister for Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres will become the deputy Liberal leader and current environment minister Matt Kean will replace Mr Perrottet as treasurer.

It was reported that Mr Perrottet had the numbers to win the party leadership ballot that is to be held on Tuesday.

On Sunday night, Planning Minister Rob Stokes said that he was planning to contest the election and that he would speak to his supporters later today.

The NSW deputy premier John Barilaro announced this morning that he would be resigning from the state government, stepping down as Nationals leader and resign from Parliament. Mr Barilaro was also minister of Regional NSW, Industry and Trade.

His resignation and that of Ms Berejiklian will trigger by elections in Monaro and Willougby and also in Bega, following the resignation of Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

Meanwhile yesterday, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard annouced 667 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths. He said that 88.1 percent of people aged over 16 had received their first COVID-19 vaccination and 66.5 percent were fully vaccinated. Ten deaths were reported yesterday and while the number of deaths were high, the number of deaths remained high.

Mr Hazzard said 981 people in the state were being treated in hospital and 195 of them were in intensive care. Of these, 140 were not vaccinated, 41 had received the first dose of the vaccine and 14 had received two doses. One was was child under nine years old and three were between and 19 years of age who were in intensive care.

M Hazzard praised the work of outgoing Premier Berejiklian and said that she had worked tirelessly since the start of the pandemic.

“She has been an amazing premier, a person of high integrity and somebody that I would place my trust in completely.  It is awfully sad to come to this situation,” Mr Hazzard said.

The state’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said that while the figures were an improvement that did not mean that the pandemic was under control and several areas remained under great concern.
