A consignment of 20 tons of humanitarian aid from Austria recently arrived in Northern Evia which had been badly affected by the fires that raged there in August.
The aid consignment, which was carried out on the initiative of the Hellenic Society of Australia President Dr Olga Saranthopolous, Wofgang Heiss head of the Austrian community in Southern Pilion, was drawn from the City of Vienna and a number of Austrian businesses and organised groups.
Dr Sarantopoulos also thanked the World Confederation of Thessalian Associations, Asklepios, the Association of Hellenic Doctors and Related Professions of Austria, the Macedonian Cultural Society in Austria, the Cypriot Cultural Centre in Vienna, AHEPA Vienna and other expatriate organisations and individuals.

The aid supplies will be administered under the supervision of the Holy Monastery of Saint David. A second consignment of bottled water is expected soon.
“It should be noted that the award-winning actors of the most important German-speaking theatre, the Burgtheater of Vienna, Peter Simonetschek and Brigitte Karner gave a special performance in the city of Hartberg in Styria, the proceeds of which they allocated to the fundraiser, as well as their full salary. While the mayor of the city of Hartberg Marcus Martschitsch accompanied by the strong applause of the spectators handed over to the two artists the amount that he raised for the Hellenic Society of Austria,” Dr Sarantopoulos said.
