A ceremony on Halki, which lies nine kilometres west of Rhodes, will mark the Dodecanesian island’s incorporation into the national Gr-eco island plan that will convert the Greek islands to green power and make them self-sufficient.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other members of the Greek government as well as the French ambassador to Greece, Patrick Maisonnave will be attending the ceremony on the island on Friday,the Athenian Macedonian News Agency reported .
Under the plan, the island will become self-sufficient in its energy needs and will also adopt electro-mobility and “smart cities” concepts.
The plan came into effect in July when the Greek Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas signed a memorandum with the French embassy in Athens, the South Aegean Region, the Municipality of Halki, the Public Power Corporation, the Syngelidis/Citroen Group, Akuoenergy Greece, Omexom/Vinci Energies, Vodafone Hellas and ALD Automotive.

Under the memorandum agreement, Papastratos company will provide an electric-powered ship to meet transport needs in summer.
The island was chosen for implementing the plan was because of its strategic location and because also a UNESCO International Peace and Friendship Centre.
