Victoria has recorded a spike in COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, just two days after case numbers dropping to below 1,000 for the first time since late September. Furthermore, Victoria’s Department of Health confirmed another nine Victorian deaths with COVID-19.

So far the Delta outbreak has claimed 335 lives and there are 660 Victorians currently in hospital, with 78 on a ventilator and 114 of these in intensive care.

There were 50,180 tests processed on Wednesday and 16,209 vaccine doses administered at state-run vaccination centres.

Thus far, 81 per cent of Victorians aged over 12 have been fully vaccinated and it is believed that the 90 per cent double-dose vaccination rate will be achieved around 24 November.

Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews had previously said that the 90 per cent milestone would result in the lifting of caps beyond that date.

“There will be no density limits anywhere,” he said.

“Masks will only be required in high risk indoor settings, such as public transport, prisons, hospitals, aged care, to give you some examples. I want to see 80,000 plus people at the Boxing (Day) Test on day one.

“It won’t be easy, but we are very confident, very, very confident that we will be able to deliver that.”

Melbourne had endured 262 days, nearly nine months, of stay-at-home restrictions over six lockdowns imposed on the city since March 2020.
