Greek teams did not fare well in European football action on Thursday night. Hosts Olympiacos fell to Eithracht Frankfurt in their Europa League Group D match. PAOK lost to Copenhagen in their Europa Conference League conference fixture, while Cypriot champions Omonia managed a draw against Basel.

It was heartbreak at Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus as Frankfurt clinched a hotly contested game barely a minute into extra time. It was a game in which the Piraeus side threatened repeatedly on the counter – mainly through the blistering pace of Henry Onyekuru on the left wing.

Eleven minutes in to the game, it was the Nigerian who opened up the Frankfurt defence to feed the ball to Youssef El-Arabi who put it in the back of the net.

The Germans crafted a neat reply to equalise four minutes later when Rafael Santos Borre set up Daichi Kamada to score.

Just after the half hour, Onyekuru again caused problems down the wing to feed El-Arabi who in turn passed to midfielder Giorgos Masouras in the box. Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp just managed to to deflect Masouras’ low shot on goal. It was evidence of their desire that Olympiacos took 12 shots on goal (with five on target) compared to Frankfurt’s five of which three were on target.

Onyekuru came close to scoring on two more occasions in a game that was ultimately settled at the end in the second minute of injury time when substitute Jens Peter Hauge delivered the killer blow from a Jesper Linström assist.

In a match in which the German team committed 22 fouls and the Reds 12, Olympiacos manager Pedro Martins said after the match that the second goal was the result of a foul and should have been disallowed.

After four games played, the result leaves Olympiacos second in Group D on six points, just a point above Fenerbahçe who beat Antwerp 3-0 in Belgium.

In Thessaloniki, PAOK were host to Copenhagen in their Group C match of the Europa Conference League.

Things began brightly for the home team when Andrija Živkovic scored in the seventh minute but the Danes who lost to PAOK two weeks earlier, were not yet done.

Peter Ankersen equalised in the 34th minute and Pep Biel scored the winner five minutes into the second half.

The late drama in this match came with the sending off of Giannis Michailidis in the 93rd minute of the game.

PAOK dominated in every aspect except the scoreline with a dominance in possession (67 percent) and work rate: they completed 498 passes with 81 percent accuracy compared to the Danes 253 passes that were 64 percent accurate. PAOK had nine corners to Copenhagen’s one.

On the negative front, the Danes dominated with 19 fouls committed earning five yellow cards to PAOK’s three from must seven fouls in the match.

The result leaves Copenhagen at the top of Group C on nine points. PAOK and Slovan Bratislava are both on seven points with the Greeks lying third on goal difference. Lincoln Red Imps Red Imps who lost 4-1 to visitors Slovan Bratislava, lie at the bottom of the group with no points to their credit.

PAOK travel to take on Slovan Bratislava on 26 November.

In Group H AC Omonia played hosts to Basel at the Pancyprian GSP Stadium in Nicosia last night. While the Swiss team dominated on every front Andronikos Kakoullis put the Cypriots in front in the 16th minute of the game.
