All the significant Super League action took place in Attica over the weekend with Olympiacos playing at home opening a three-point lead at the top of the table following their 1-0 victory in a Piraeus derby against Ionikos Nikaias on Sunday.

Athens’ rivals AEK spurned an opportunity to at least head the table for a day when they managed a 2-2 draw with Apollon on Saturday.

PAOK have moved to within a point of AEK, who are on 20 points, following their visit to Athens where they defeated Panathinaikos 3-1 at the Leoforos Alexandras Stadium.

It was an improving Giorgios Masouras who gave the Reds an early and slender lead over Ionikos Nikaias at at the Georigios Karaiskakis stadium in the 17th minute of the game. It was enough to secure the three points and extend Olympiacos’ lead at the top of the Super League to 23 points after nine games.

On Saturday, AEK sensing an opportunity to go top of the table threw everything against a spirited Apollon Smyrni playing on their home ground at the George Kamaras Stadium. AEK dominated possession  took 24 shots on goal with seven shots on target. They also had eight corners to none from Apollon. Apollon managed just five shots on goal of which four were on target. AEK’s Levi Garcia scored first in the 13th minute only for Nikolaos Ioannidis to equalise four minutes from time in the first half.

A Giorgos Pamidis strike had given Apollon the lead just after the hour. AEK drew in the 80th minute through Sergio Araujo.

On Sunday, PAOK’s Chuba Akpom drew first blood against Panathinaikos in the 13th minute to hold the lead into the next half when Mauricio evened matters on the 59th minute. Late in the game, PAOK’s Jasmin Kurtic converted a penalty five minutes from full time. He then piled on the misery when his free kick sailed into the Panathinaikos goal in the eighth minute of extra time. The result leaves Panathinaikos in eighth place on 11 points with Aris a place above them on a better goal difference.

There was trouble outside the Panthessaliko Stadio, home of Volos, when 2,000 Aris fans travelled from Thessaloniki to Volos in defiance on a COVID-related ban on travelling fans. They clashed with police outside the stadium.

The tensions spilled over into the game itself as players began fighting on the pitch in the 11th minute. The referee dishing out a red card, first to Aris player Facundo Bertoglio and then to Volos’ Jean Barientos and Fausto Grillo in the 16th minute.

The game was suspended for nearly an hour after away fans broke into the stadium’s VIP stands. When play resumed, Badu Ndiaye scored for Aris. Team-mate Mateo Garcia scored his team’s second and two minutes later, in the 48minute of the game, Nicholás Oróz claimed a solitary consolation for Volos.

PAS Giannina dominated their encounter with visitors Panetolikos to run out 3-0 winners. Most of the damage was done in the first half by Rodrigo Erramupse and Juan José Perea, with Giannis Kargas completing the scoring in the second half. The result places the Ajax of Epirus fifth on the table on 13 points.

Lamia climbed to ninth spot on nine points after their surprise 1-0 defeat of Asteras Tripolis on Sunday.

Lamia enjoys a better goal difference over Ionikos and Astera Tripolis respectively who are also on nine points.

With the international break over the next two weeks, domestic action is set to resume on 20 November.
