People who enjoy a good song are invited to join the Australian Hellenic Choir.

In two short years, the group has become one of the most recognised music choirs in the Greek community with over 45 members who are from Greek, Italian and Australian backgrounds.

The music is wide-ranging and all-encompassing as far as the Greek perspective is concerned: Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Stavros Xarhakos, Dionyssis Savopoulos and the works of many other iconic and legendary composers are taught. Apart from the benefits of learning more about music, participants – thorugh the songs – also become better acquainted with Greek history through songs. There is a presentation of music from the post-war era, to songs from Constantinople as well as modern classics.

Along with the history of Greece via its music, participants also learn more about the Greek language.

The benefits are many. Apart from the fun and social interaction, joining a choir has physical benefits as it teaches people how to breathe properly, speak with greater clarity and also helps in their mental well-being.

In the past two years the choir has gained 45 members who come together for two hours a week to enjoy song.

The choir rehearses on Monday nights at Marrickville, in Sydney.

New members are urged to sign up and join in the three concerts already arranged for next year.
