Popular Greek singer Christos Kyriazis died at dawn on Wednesday after battling with cancer for months.

Michael Tsatsakis, a close friend of the singer, told Greek newspaper Proto Thema that “he fought but did not succeed”.

His wife, Sofia, was with him by his side.

His father worked as a furniture maker and, he, too learnt the family trade, however he never hid his love for music.

Born in Kaminia, Piraeus, in 1953, the singer began to learn his first notes using a handmade guitar, when he was 12 years old.

Five years later he joined a small rock band and performed in cafes and other venues.

He was the founding member of “Prokes” (1972), but he later left to study in Italy.

He had a lot of success in music, with his song “You remind me of my mother” (1992) exceeding 125,000 sales and going platinum.
