Nikos Androulakis came out in the lead of the Movement for Change (KINAL) elections held on Sunday. With 37.03 per cent of the votes garnered by Mr Androulakis, followed by 27.79 per cent for George Papandreou and 25.96 per cent for Andreas Loverdos, the second round of voting will take place next Sunday with a Androulakis-Papandreou showdown.

Mr Androulakis sent a message of unity and renewal to KINAL constituents following the announcement of results. He said, “PASOK is returning”. On his part, Mr Papandreou, former prime minister and the son of PASOK founder Andreas Papandreou, invited voters to participate in the second round of voting where he hopes he will be more successful.

The other three candidates standing for the party leadership were Pavlos Geroulanos (2.97 per cent), Haris Kastanidis (2.97 per cent) and Pavlos Christidis (3.25 per cent).

There was a strong turnout at the polls with 276,000 people showing up, surpassing the previous record set in 2017 when 212,000 people participated in the party elections.
