Parents and guardians in Greece who keep their children out of school for any reason, including the pandemic, will face fines and jail time.
Greece’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Justice on Tuesday presented a draft amendment to Parliament.
According to the bill, whoever takes care of a minor and does not register the child in school or neglects to ensure the child completes its compulsory education (to grade 9) will be served a jail sentence of up to two years and a fine.
There is a great deal of concern by parents as case numbers are high in Greece with 7009 new cases and 99 deaths confirmed on Tuesday. There have been 18,815 COVID-related deaths in Greece, mainly concerning the elderly.

Ta Nea reported last month that one in four new cases concerned six school units in Achaia and there is cause for alarm among Greek families as new COVID-19 cases continue to be alarmingly high.
