The A-League’s top of the ladder appears to be a bit crowed at the moment, however, come Sunday night when the 4th round is completed, things could free up.

The most “Hellenic” club of the tournament, Western Sydney are playing hosts to first place Macarthur, whilst in Adelaide there will be the Original Rivalry between local United and Melbourne Victory.

The so-called giants of Australian football, Sydney FC, will be looking to score their first win of the season against the Mariners at Gosford.

In total, four sides are still searching for their first victory and another two are looking to preserve their unbeaten starts.

Melbourne City-Perth Glory 1-0
A late winner saw Melbourne City down Perth Glory 1-0 in the round’s first clash on Wednesday evening.

City dominated the entire night in chances but their inability to convert gave Perth hope of escaping from Melbourne with a point.

Substitute Nathaniel Atkinson became the hero of the evening when his 88th minute header hit the back of the net, giving his side their well-earned three points.

“Original Rivalry”
The biggest match this round is the clash between Adelaide and Melbourne Victory on Saturday evening.

The Reds have begun their season with three consecutive draws while Victory’s strong start was halted last week with a 0-3 home defeat to Perth Glory.

Adelaide captain Stefan Mauk ignored his side’s recent successes against Melbourne, having won seven of their past eight meetings, focusing on the threat they pose now under their new manager, Tony Popovic.

“They’re a well organised team, going forward they’ve got class players…But it’s important for us that we go out there knowing the occasion and the intensity is going to be up and we have to win the fight,” Stefan Mauk told media.

Friday night clash
Tonight (Friday), Arthur Papas’ Newcastle face Wellington in a contest they will desperately hope to win.

The Jets are coming off a wonderful comeback draw against Sydney FC while the Phoenix fell to the Wanderers despite dominating the match.

Mr Papas heaped praise on the New Zealand club but had faith that his side will earn their maiden win this season.

“One team has been together for three years. One team has been together for three games and I still think we can have a very good performance tomorrow and get a result,” Mr Papas told media.

Mr Papas confirmed the Jets will be without Greek winger, Savvas Siatravanis, saying “Savvas is close but not close enough for this week.”

Western United host bottom-placed Brisbane in the first of Saturday’s fixtures, hoping to maintain their position in the top three.

FFA CUP woes
The Green and Blacks suffered a mid-week FFA Cup exit at the hands of Wellington and they will be looking to return to winning ways against Roar.

Brisbane earned their first point last week and, after losing both of their matches in Victoria earlier this term, will do everything they can to avoid a third defeat in the state.

Western Sydney hosts the league leaders, Macarthur FC, and both teams will be looking to continue their unbeaten starts this season.

Each side lost mid-week in the FFA Cup Round of 16, Macarthur to Sydney FC in extra time 2-0 and the Wanderers to NPL side, APIA Leichhardt, in a shocking 2-1 upset.

Western Sydney will be hoping players like John Koutroumbis, Terry Antonis and Dimitri Petratos can help them secure the three points.

On Sunday, last season’s finalists, Sydney FC, travel to the Central Coast in what looms as a must-win fixture for the visitors.

Kosta Barbarouses made his highly anticipated return in the Sky Blues’ mid-week FFA Cup triumph over Macarthur.

The Mariners will be eager to test the opposition’s fitness while Sydney will hope that Brazilian striker, Bobo, returns to the lineup to give his club a boost to their A-League campaign, where they currently sit second last.
