Greece’s coronavirus infection numbers have climbed to new highs yet again reaching 35,580 new COVID-19 cases as the country struggles to deal with testing demands and hospitalisations ahead of New Year’s Eve.

Of the new cases, 15,713 were registered in Attica – mainly in the Greek capital – and 3,997 in Thessaloniki. Only 32 were detected at entry points to the county; the majority of the new infections are due to community transmission.

It is the biggest increase in one day Greece has seen, 6,752 more COVID-19 infections from 3pm Wednesday to 3p Thursday according to the National Organization for Public Health (EODY). Currently there are 636 patients in intensive care.

There were 72 new fatalities, the same as on Wednesday, with the total death toll reaching 20,708.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,170,293 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The median age of new infections is 37 years, while the median age of fatalities is 78 years.
