The arrival of 2022 is bringing about memories from one of the most tragic events that forever changed modern Greek history. This year marks 100 years from the Asian Minor Catastrophe with thousands of Anatolian Greeks uprooted from their homes in an avalanche of genocide crimes and looting that to this day remains a source of pain for up to four generations.
The Asian Minor Catastrophe saw an immigration wave of over 1,2 million people arriving to Greece in terrible physical and psychological state while Greece, still in a state of deep poverty was called to deal with both housing, treating and feeding the refugees.
A century’s passing from the tragic reality of the Asia Minor Catastrophe when our fellow Greek brothers were torn from their homes and families is not a happy anniversary, it is a remembrance of separation from the holy lands and stories of a nation’s history.
To honour these stories that need to continue being told, Neos Kosmos will be sharing extensive features focused on the Asia Minor Catastrophe for the entirety of 2022.
As many of our readers hail from those exact same lands, our team is putting out a call for anyone that has such a story to share.
No matter how big or small, positive or negative we want to hear or receive your story. If you or someone you know would like to share their ancestral history of immigration from Asia Minor during the Catastrophe seeking refuge in Greece, Australia or elsewhere we’d love to get in contact.
Your ancestor’s Odyssey is part of our collective history and deserves to be told and passed down generations.
