PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis has made a last plea for unvaccinated over 60s to get their COVID-19 jab, as the deadline for appointments bookings at the age cohort is set to expire on Sunday midnight.
Referencing government sources, state-run ANA-MPA news agency reports there will be no extension given to the deadline with processes for the imposition of a fine for the unvaccinated to start from Monday.
Relevant registry authorities will begin to compile the final list of unvaccinated people aged 60 or over, who will be fined 50 euros for January (half-month) and 100 euros for each consecutive month thereof.
Some exemptions are expected to apply for Greeks abroad, and for those who have been granted an exemption by medical committees for reasons relating to serious allergic reactions and confirmed allergy conditions.
Nine in 10 people over 60 in Greece are estimated to have been vaccinated or have bookings underway, according to Mr Mitsotakis.
“I want to emphasize that, from the moment we imposed this mandatory measure, almost half of those who had not been vaccinated made the right choice to get inoculated. So this measure was successful,” he said.
“I urge the few remaining unvaccinated people over 60 to take that step and get inoculated.”
