Three more suspects in the stabbing murder of 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos that took place in Thessaloniki on 1 February were remanded in custody following their appearance before a prosecutor on Thursday. Two of the men, aged 21 and 23, are to be prosecuted following a unanimous decision by the judiciary.
The third man, the key suspect identified as a member of a football hooligan gang, had fled to his country of origin, Albania, earlier in the week to avoid arrest. Greek police issued an international warrant which led to the man handing himself to Albanian authorities on Thursday, ANA-MPA reported.
The man stated that he was “devastated” by what happened and denied having played a key part in the unprovoked attack that left Kampanos dead and another two youths injured. The suspect’s lawyer said there had been “excellent cooperation” with Greek police authorities in order to speed up his extradition and his return to Thessaloniki.
So far, six suspects have been remanded, with the remaining four arrested suspects set to appear before the prosecutor today.
