Greece’s government has agreed to ease several ongoing measures pertaining to the handling of the pandemic, after convening with the committee of expert health advisors on Wednesday.

As of 1 March, Greece will increase capacity at sporting events to 50 per cent, it will allow standing customers who are fully vaccinated at entertainment venues, and will also resume school trips .

The experts’ committee, however, has put a lid on all large events celebrating the annual Carnival in Greece. The possibility of allowing a limited number of indoor carnival events with the mandatory display of vaccine certificates, is being discussed.

Even though carnival parades in Greece, also knows as Apokries, are a major tourist attraction and source of revenue for festivals, venues and seasonal retail stores predominantly in Patras, Athens, Crete, Thessaloniki, Volos and Corfu, experts are concerned that parades could become super-spreader events.

The huge crowds in open spaces, combined with the increased travel recorded during the days of Carnival, could quickly disrupt ongoing efforts to contain the pandemic, Kathimerini reported.
