The Organising Committee for the Celebration of the Greek National Day in Victoria is officially preparing to honour Greece’s National Day of Independence on 25 March 2022.
On Sunday 20 March at 12pm the Greek Community will gather at the Shrine of Remembrance to celebrate Greece’s most important milestone in a ceremony attended by Archbishop Makarios, and Bishops Kyriakos of Sozopolis and Evmenios of Kerasounda alongside esteemed members of the clergy and the local government. The General Consul of Greece in Melbourne Mr Emmanuel Kakavelakis, diplomats and state as well as federal government representatives will be in attendance.
As announced by the Organising Committee the march will not take place for the third year in a row for public health reasons, however, the rest of the emblematic actions and events will continue in honor of the 201st anniversary of the revolution of 1821 and those who marked the liberation struggle.
Mr Tony Tsourdalakis, congratulated and thanked the organisations, schools and parishes that showed interest in organising an anniversary event and declared their participation but also in the national program of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
Standard bearers from day and evening schools will march to the Shrine to honour the fallen heroes of 1821 representing their schools.
This year marks 100 years from the Asian Minor Catastrophe with thousands of Anatolian Greeks uprooted from their homes having to migrate to Greece, the rest of Europe, America and of course, Australia. In Australia, the Asia Minor Migrant group has played an integral part in every aspect of the modern society.
To celebrate their contribution the Organising Committee for the Celebration of the Greek National Day has prepared a slew of commemorative events and happenings in collaboration with ethnic clubs and associations, organisations, schools and local councils, with the assistance and support of the state government.
