If you are seeking the advice of the ancients on marriage and having children then the “hybrid” Greek History and Culture Seminar by Prof Tim Parkin will be worth attending on Thursday, 3 March in person or online.
Professor Parkin of the University of Melbourne will deliver a talk entitled Ancient advice on when to marry and have children as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Greek History and Culture Seminars .
The seminar which will be held at the Mezzanine level of the Greek Centre in Lonsdale Street at 7pm AEDT will also be livestreamed on YouTube Live, Facebook Live and Twitter Broadcast.
If you attend in person, you will need to provide proof of vaccination to attend the seminar at the Greek Centre.

Prof Parkin will discuss Ancient Greek and some Roman views on the ideal age to get married and to have children. As there is no single answer to such questions, Prof Parkin will look at the view of different sources, especially Aristotle, for the answers they provide.
Prof Parkin joined the University of Melbourne in 2018 as the inaugural Elizabeth and James Tatoulis Chair in Classics. Born in New Zealand, As a Rhodes Scholar, he was awarded a DPhil at Oxford University. He has since worked in universities in New Zealand, Australia, Germany and Britain.
His main area of research is Roman social, cultural, legal and demographic history and published works include Demography and Roman Society (1992), Old Age in the Roman World: A Social and Cultural History (2003), Roman Social History: A Sourcebook (2007), and The Oxford Handbook of Childhood and Education in the Classical World (2014).
He is currently working on a book on ancient sexual health and is co-editing a six-volume world history of old age.
