In an effort to deescalate the situation in the east Mediterranean in the face of the war in Ukraine, Greece and Turkey have decided to come to a joint understanding and ease tensions.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shook hands over the decision during their meeting at the Turkish presidential residence, Vahdettin Mansion.

According to ANA-MPA the two leaders enjoyed a lunch and a deep conversation as allies determined to help ease political developments in the area and improve communication at all levels. Despite their long-standing disagreements they both desire to establish an economic collaboration as well as coordinate action toward the opening of humanitarian corridors in Ukraine.

Mr Mitsotakis committed to holding a Greece-Turkey confidence-building measures meeting in April, as long as there is no escalation of tension, while both leaders agreed to hold the 5th High-Level Cooperation Council in Greece this coming fall.

Mitsotakis and Erdogan each reiterated their set stance on bilateral issues, but despite disagreements both decided to emphasise the positive agenda and their countries’ good neighbouring relations while fulfilling their respective obligations in terms of taking in refugees.
