Theodore Christopoulos of Underdale in Adelaide allegedly kicked his pregnant partner in the stomach while wearing steel cap boots with intent to kill her unborn baby, according to court documents.
The 48-year-old was charged with administering poison on another person to procure miscarriage, aggravated causing harm with intent and two counts of aggravated assault.
Appearing via video link from custody at the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court last Monday Christopoulos made a bid for bail.
The court file showed the allegations related to his partner and his step daughter.
According to the documents two allegations stemmed from an incident from between October 31, 2019 and March 1 last year.
Magistrate Paul Bennett told Mr Christopoulos the allegations were most serious.
The court heard the accused contested the allegations made against him.
Prosecution did not oppose bail with Mr Bennett granting Mr Christopoulos home detention bail at a close family friend’s home in Lewiston.
Under his bail conditions the accused cannot make contact with the alleged victim or come within one kilometre of her home.
“I think in this instance, given the seriousness of the allegations, I propose also to impose a condition … that he not go within one kilometre of the (alleged victim’s) address,” Mr Bennett said.
Under South Australian law the charge relating to procuring a miscarriage can carry with it a term of life imprisonment if proven.
Christopoulos will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in May.
