The Governor of Western Australia Kim Beazley AC joined the Greek community of Perth on Sunday to commemorate the 25 March anniversary of Greek Independence at the State War Memorial in King’s Park.
The governor who was a guest of the Consulate of Greece in Perth laid a wreath of olive leaves with blue and white ribbons of the Greek national colours.
A statement from the governor’s office said he had been honoured to attend the event.
“A guest of the Consulate of Greece in Perth, the Governor joined many in the community to honour those who fought for the independence of Greece after four centuries under the Ottoman Empire.
“He noted the strong connection between Greece and Australia, and the contributions the community has made to this state. To honour this relationship, the Governor laid a wreath made from the leaves of Governor Stirling’s olive tree in Government House Gardens,” said the statement.
A spokesperson for the consulate said it had been an honour to have the governor joining the community in its commemoration.
“We are grateful for both the wreath he laid, full of symbolisms, as well as for his kind and inspiring words, which spoke to the heart of the Greek Community of WA.
“Thank you, Governor, we are looking forward to welcoming you again soon on another occasion,” said the statement from Greek Consulate in Perth.
Governor Beazley served as deputy prime minister of Australia from 1995 to 96 and was leader of the Opposition (1996-2001 and 2010-16) and was Australia’s ambassador to the United States (2010-16). He is the 33rd Governor of Western Australia a role he assumed on 1 May, 2018.
