March 27 marked the Food For Thought Network’s celebration of International Women’s Day where founder of the network, Varvara Ioannou, noted that the 2022 theme #BreakTheBias is in sync with the mission of Food For Thought Network and her book HER VOICE: Greek Women and Their Friends.

“This is what the Network and the women featured in the book have been doing for their whole life,” Ms Ioannou said.

“Navigating and overcoming everything from racism, sexism, ageism, bullying, harassment and excelling in all aspects of life.”

Ms Ioannou embraced this opportunity to thank her committee and all in attendance and acknowledge some of the key women present who have assisted the growth of the FFTN.

“I find International Women’s Day an opportune time to offer gratitude to the women in my life who have given me strength, friendship and tutelage” she explained and proceeded to present, Anthoula Paraskeva, Barbara Yerondais, Maria Foscolos and Rena Frangioudaki OAM with a certificate of appreciation.

This gesture was much appreciated by the recipients but also everyone in the room, who responded with resounding applause.

Following a meal presented by Simon Tsalikidis, owner of Heidi café, a round table discussions ensued where attendees were called to express their voices around their experiences of growing up as children, as teenagers and to offer any sage advice they would give their younger selves retrospectively.

Patron of the network, Professor Vasso Apostolopoulou, aptly pointed to the two men in attendance and reminded everyone the important role they also play in our lives.

Ms Ioannou closed off the event by drawing on a quote from Aristotle about friendship, as the Network has over its 21-year history forged many friendships among women.

“Aristotle figured that there were three kinds of friendship: Friendships of utility are useful… many have come to the network and befriended me and others because it was useful.”

Friendships of pleasure are enjoyable and “many came along to our social events because they were fun… and friendships of the virtue and good and are based on mutual respect and admiration,” concluded Ms Ioannou.

Thanking the guests Ms Ioannou promised that this learning journey would continue over the next 20 years as the FFTN network continues to grow and thrive.
