In notable changes overall, Australia’s overseas-born population has recorded a drop for the first time since 2000.
The decrease was from 29,8% in 2020 to 29.1% in 2021, meaning that according to the latest date 7.5 million residents were born overseas, down from 7.7 million.
“This decrease can be attributed to the COVID-19 travel restrictions and the impact on overseas migration in both directions. The travel and migration intentions of many people changed due to the pandemic,” the ABS report states.
In 2020, Australia ranked 9th internationally for the total number of migrants in its population.
Australia’s estimated resident population (ERP) by country of birth is measured at 30 June each year. National data is available annually with a state and territory breakdown only available for Census years.
